The goal of VacZineNations! is to develop an interdisciplinary platform bringing students and artists together to address how the social crux of the vaccination issue — public good versus individual choice — differs widely between different countries and communities. Drawing submission from students and artists in Canada, the UK, China and Armenia, in printmaking, visual arts, graphic design, journalism and media literacy, the project mirrors the interdisciplinary approach of Immune Nations as a whole, and asks participants to consider how they can employ strategies of collaboration and nexus thinking in relation to the topic of vaccinations. How can artists, designers, journalists and policy makers work together to challenge vaccine hesitancy? How can we position and communicate local experience in global contexts?

Rethinking “VacZineNations!” in the Era of Covid-19
Pre-pandemic, the topic of vaccines seemed vital but distant and for many of the student participants engagement in the project was guided by ‘the brief’ rather than the lived experience that has now reshaped all our lives. But like art, such briefs sow seeds. Considering the project in this current moment, we now ask how the student participants in VacZineNations!, in each of their global contexts, continue to reflect on the power and potential for their work to encourage vaccination and save lives. — Rachelle Viader Knowles and Mkrtich Tonoyan, August 2021 |
